MOSTI Minister Chang Lih Kang Witnesses MOA Exchange between XMUM and IBG Manufacturing

July 22, 2024

Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM) signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with IBG Manufacturing Sdn Bhd on 18 July 2024, on evaluating the life cycle carbon emissions of biofertilizer products as the base for sustainable policy formulation in advancing biofertilizer development.

This event was held during the National Bioeconomy Showcase 2024 (NBiOSHOWCASE 2024) organized by Bioeconomy Corporation at World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur from 17-18 2024.

The MOA was signed by Dato’ Yeat Siaw Ping, Chief Executive Officer of IBG Manufacturing Sdn. Bhd. and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zhang Ying, the Vice President of XMUM. YB Tuan Chang Lih Kang, the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation of Malaysia, YB Dato’ Haji Mohammad Yusof Bin Apdal, Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, and YBhg Dato’ Dr Lee Boon Chye, Chairman of Malaysian Bioeconomy Development Corporation Sdn Bhd, witnessed the ceremony.

The research project is co-led by Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr. Vincent Woon Kok Sin and Asst. Prof. Dr. Tan Jian Ping. Mr. Kyle Sebastian Mulya, a Master’s student at the New Energy Science and Engineering Programme, is responsible for the technical development of the research and is directly funded under the project.

To date, the research collaboration has found that IBG’s biofertilizers emit 10 times less upstream carbon emissions (i.e., manufacturing and transportation) than microalgae-based biofertilizers, 23 times less than chemical fertilizers, and up to 10,666 times less emissions than most organic fertilizers (due to its high decomposition rate, which generates significantly larger quantities of carbon emissions).

The research collaboration has so far resulted in the acceptance of an indexed paper in an international journal.

IBG is a BioNexus status company which is committed to driving biotechnology in agriculture sector by initiating research projects with institutions or universities, in order to shape a sustainable agriculture future with advanced biotechnology.
