Suntar-CAMS Sustainability Research Laboratory Inaugurated at XMUM

October 25, 2024

The Suntar-CAMS Sustainability Research Laboratory was officially inaugurated at Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM) on 21 October 2024.

This initiative, a collaboration between Suntar International Group and XMUM China-ASEAN College of Marine Science (CAMS), aims to advance cutting-edge research in developing sustainable solutions for critical global challenges, including climate change and sustainable food production.

With an initial investment of RM 1,000,000 (around USD 230,000) from Suntar International Group, the laboratory will explore ways to utilize greenhouse gases, such as CO2 and methane, as valuable feedstock for biobased products. By leveraging CAMS’s expertise in marine biotechnology and environmental chemistry, combined with Suntar’s advanced membrane technologies and downstream processing capabilities, the lab seeks to make significant strides in sustainable development.

The laboratory will work closely with researchers from Malaysia, China, Singapore, and other international partners to foster breakthroughs in sustainable solutions.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Prof. Wang Ruifang, President of XMUM; Prof. Wang Huiqiong, Assistant President of XMUM;  Dr. Lan Weiguang, the founder of Suntar International Group, along with other distinguished guests.

Dr. Lan Weiguang, an alumnus of Xiamen University, reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the university through this partnership. He highlighted the importance of sustainability research and conveyed his optimism about the significant contributions the laboratory is poised to make. He also expressed his deep appreciation for the strong support of XMUM to this collaboration.

Prof. Luo Yawei, Deputy Dean of CAMS, thanked Suntar International Group for their generosity in making this collaboration a success. Prof. Yeap Swee Keong, Assistant Dean of CAMS, and co-leader of the laboratory with Dr. Steven Aw, highlighted the research strengths of CAMS and its potential contributions to the initiative. He emphasized that the collaboration would also benefit students by providing exposure to sustainability research and fostering international industry connections.

Suntar International Group is a leading provider of filtration, separation & purification solutions. With rich experience applying membrane, continuous ion exchange (chromatography), and other advanced process technologies in food, pharmaceutical and chemical industries, Suntar aligns its initiatives with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to address global challenges.

CAMS at XMUM was established in 2016 with support from the China-ASEAN Maritime Cooperation Fund. The college is dedicated to forstering collaborations in marine science education, research, and policy consultation between China and ASEAN countries.
