New Energy Science and Engineering Undergraduate Publishes in Journal of Environmental Chemical Engineering

December 1, 2022

The Research and Postgraduate Centre congratulates Yan Zekai, Asst. Prof. Dr. Lai Sin Yuan, Asst. Prof. Dr. Ngan Cheng Loong, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Li Haiyan from School of Energy and Chemical Engineering for publishing an article entitled Recent advances in energy-efficient and regenerative SO2 absorption over deep eutectic solvents in Journal of Environmental Chemical Engineeringan SCI Q1 journal with the latest impact factor of 7.968.

Yan Zekai, the article’s first author, is a fresh graduate of Class of 2022. Inspired by this research achievement, which is also his final year project, he will continue his Master’s programme at Universiti Malaya in the coming year.

This is a collaborative research by Xiamen University Malaysia, Universiti Sains Malaysia, and Xiamen University. Dr. Lai Sin Yuan is Yang Zekai’s supervisor, as well as the article’s corresponding author.

This review summarizes the findings on the SO2 abatement via flue gas desulphurization focusing on energy efficiency and regenerative absorption approaches. Various types of deep eutectic solvents (DES), such as inorganic salts-based, azole-based, caprolactam-based, imidazolium-based, and polyethylene glycol-based DESs, are elucidated, which leads to discussions on their structure-property relationships, and reaction conditions correlated with the desulphurization capacity. The energy efficiency aspect and plausible mechanisms are emphasized too. After exploring the depth and breadth of this technology, this review ended with challenges and future perspectives.

Yang Zekai said: “I express my heartfelt thanks to my supervisor, Dr. Lai Sin Yuan, who is the first and most important mentor in my research study. Her continuous guidance and encouragement have fueled my inner momentum to keep progressing. Also, I would like to extend my gratitude to other authors for their efforts and support – the versatile expertise of our research team has given this article the greatest value.”
