The MBA Centre, Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM) recently led an impactful study trip to Hangzhou and Haining, China, from October 28 to 30 2024. This immersive experience offered XMUM’s MBA students and alumni invaluable exposure to China’s top industries, cutting-edge technology hubs, and prominent academic institutions, equipping them with knowledge and perspectives to support their future global business ventures.

Visit to Alibaba Renhe Data Centre and Cloud Valley Exhibition Centre in Hangzhou

The mission began with an immersive visit to the Alibaba Renhe Data Centre, where students and alumni were introduced to the intricate world of data security, cloud computing, and large-scale information management. This hands-on experience provided a practical glimpse into the infrastructure fueling China’s dynamic digital economy.

The journey continued at the Cloud Valley Exhibition Centre, showcasing Alibaba’s ground-breaking innovations in artificial intelligence, smart city solutions, and cloud services. Participants gained valuable insights into how AI and cloud technologies are transforming industries globally. Adding to the experience, Dr. Sun Yuefeng, an AI expert at Alibaba, delivered a captivating talk on the company’s advancements in AI technology and innovation. He also shared his perspectives on the future of AI, offering students a unique opportunity to learn from real-world expertise and gain a deeper understanding of the rapidly evolving tech landscape.

Safety and Preparedness Training at Safe City International Emergency Safety Education Center

On the second day, students and alumni embarked on an action-packed visit to the Safe City International Emergency Safety Education Center in Hangzhou, where they participated in immersive, hands-on safety training. Through interactive sessions, they mastered essential emergency skills such as electric shock prevention, subway safety, fire extinguisher handling, and CPR. Adding to the excitement, participants practiced high-rise descent, vehicle submersion escape, and earthquake response techniques—each one an invaluable life-saving skill designed to boost both confidence and preparedness in real-world scenarios.

Visit to Geely Holding Group Co., LTD. 

At the headquarters of Geely Holding Group Co., LTD in Hangzhou, students and alumni delved into the forefront of China’s electric vehicle (EV) industry, gaining insights into Geely’s innovations in EV manufacturing and intelligent driving technology. The visit highlighted Geely’s commitment to sustainable mobility and its strategic global partnerships, particularly its collaboration with Malaysia’s national car manufacturer, Proton. This partnership underscored the role of cross-border collaborations in driving growth, technological exchange, and international market expansion, reflecting China’s growing influence in the global automotive landscape.

The experience was further enriched by a tour of Geely’s showroom, where participants had an up-close look at the company’s impressive EV lineup, showcasing cutting-edge automotive design. Adding depth to the visit, several Geely managers from different countries shared their management practices and marketing strategies. Engaging discussions with these experts provided students with valuable, practical insights into real-world management and marketing, bridging theory and practice in a meaningful way.

Advanced Manufacturing at Haining Pan-Semiconductor Industrial Park 

At the Haining Pan-Semiconductor Industrial Park, students and alumni gained an in-depth understanding of the semiconductor industry, exploring the entire value chain from raw materials to chip packaging. The visit offered a fascinating look at cutting-edge semiconductor technologies and highlighted China’s strategic investments in this critical high-tech sector, underscoring the industry’s pivotal role in powering modern electronics and driving global innovation.

Adding to the experience, the park’s management shared insights into their strategies for attracting investments and cultivating top talent from around the world. Their policies and practices provided a practical perspective on fostering a thriving, innovation-driven ecosystem within the semiconductor industry.

The visit to TDG Holding Co., Ltd., a leader in electronic materials, special equipment manufacturing, and new energy/environmental technologies, highlighted its significant contributions to the electronics and semiconductor sectors. Renowned for its high-tech innovation and strong R&D capabilities, TDG plays a pivotal role in both domestic and international markets. During the visit, company representatives shared insights into TDG’s operational strategies, production processes, and commitment to sustainability. This experience provided students and alumni with a deeper understanding of China’s electronic manufacturing landscape and TDG’s impact on global technological advancements.

Cross-Border Business Success with Unity Technology Co., Ltd.

At Unity Technology Co., Ltd., a Malaysian-founded company based in Haining, students were privileged to meet the company’s founder in person. The founder shared his experiences navigating the dynamic Chinese startup ecosystem, emphasizing the importance of adapting to local business cultures and understanding the unique environment to overcome obstacles. He highlighted the critical role of strategic decision-making and cultural awareness in building a successful cross-border enterprise.

A significant insight from the session was the founder’s focus on aligning business ventures with government policies to ensure sustainable growth. He discussed how leveraging supportive initiatives, such as technology incentives and industrial development plans, had been instrumental in Unity Technology’s expansion. At Zhejiang University International Business School (ZIBS) in Haining, XMUM MBA students had an enriching opportunity to interact with ZIBS iMBA students during a campus tour and networking session. This cross-cultural exchange fostered meaningful dialogues on global business trends, strategies, and shared academic experiences. Students participated in group case studies and collaborative discussions, exploring diverse perspectives and problem-solving approaches.
