SEPANG – On the evening of April 30, 2025, the volleyball courts came alive as postgraduate students traded their lab coats and laptops for knee pads and jerseys. The Postgraduate Student Council (PGSC), in a dynamic collaboration with the XMUM Volleyball Club, hosted a three-hour sports clinic and mixer designed to promote physical wellness and cross-disciplinary networking.
The event attracted 18 participants, offering a rare midweek opportunity for the postgraduate community to step away from intensive research and coursework.
Masterclass from the Pros
The session focused on skill development and inclusive play, guided by expert members of the Volleyball Club:
- Technical Warm-up: Led by Lee Long Wei (IBU2209782), the event opened with a 30-minute intensive warm-up and interactive drills. These exercises were specifically designed to teach PG students fundamental techniques, ensuring even beginners felt confident on the court.
- Tactical Briefing: Yap Kuang Cheng (MBT2109028), alongside PGSC committee members, provided a comprehensive briefing on official game rules and assisted in forming balanced teams to ensure fair and spirited play.
Bridging the Campus Community
The highlight of the evening was the Volleyball Play session, where members of the Volleyball Club joined the matches. This integration was intentional, aimed at fostering positive engagement between the postgraduate community and undergraduate-led sports clubs.
The invitation was also extended to XMUM staff members, creating a unique, informal environment that boosted friendly relationships between students and faculty.
More Than Just a Game
“This event was about more than just points on a scoreboard,” noted a PGSC representative. “It was about connecting students from diverse backgrounds—researchers, MBA candidates, and international students—through the universal language of sport.”
By the end of the night, the 18 participants left the court not just with improved serves and spikes, but with a strengthened sense of belonging within the wider XMUM community.
