Recently, Xiamen University Malaysia received funding totaling RM180,000 from ALPS Global Holdings Bhd for research aimed at combating Alzheimer’s disease. The grant will support a study exploring the combined effects of electroacupuncture and stem cell therapy on neurodegeneration and cognitive function in a rat model.
The research seeks to investigate innovative approaches that integrate traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) with stem cell therapy, potentially paving the way for new treatment options for individuals affected by cognitive decline.
Dr. Tham Seng Kong, Group CEO of ALPS Global Holdings Bhd, stated: “ALPS Global Holdings Bhd is a fully integrated biotechnology research, medical, and wellness company dedicated to the development of personalized medicine using cutting-edge technologies such as genomics, DNA, mRNA, and cellular therapy. We aim to bridge the gaps in building the integrative medicine industry. Through this initiative, we will strengthen Malaysia’s institution-industry collaboration projects.”
Associate Professor Dr. Kim Yun Jin, a principal investigator in the project, expressed enthusiasm about the funding: “This support will enable us to conduct critical research that could lead to breakthroughs in Alzheimer’s treatment mechanisms. The combination of electroacupuncture and stem cell therapy offers a novel approach that we believe could significantly impact cognitive health.”
In addition to research collaboration, this partnership will also provide educational programs and training opportunities for students and researchers in the field, enhancing community well-being and strengthening Malaysia’s research landscape.
