The Research and Postgraduate Centre congratulates Assistant Professor Ts. Dr. Haw Choon Yian from the Department of New Energy Science and Engineering, School of Energy and Chemical Engineering, for being awarded “National Outstanding Young Educator” at the Private Education Excellence Awards 2023.

Held on 10 August 2023 at Mandarin Oriental Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, this annual event was organized for the 8th time by Private Education Cooperative of Malaysia (Educoop). It aims to recognize outstanding private educators from all private institutions in Malaysia under the categories of teaching, science, arts and design, engineering, research and innovation, and humanities.
This is the third that XMUM faculty members have won the Private Education Excellence Awards. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tan Swee Tiam and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ong Wee Jun were honored as “National Outstanding Researcher” and “National Outstanding Young Researcher” in 2022, while Prof. Huang Nay Ming and Assoc. Prof. Ong Wee Jun received the award of “National Outstanding Researcher” and “National Outstanding Reviewer” in 2019.
“I am immensely honoured and humbled to be the recipient of this award. It is more than a heartening recognition in my academic and research journey that I have spent all these years. It has propelled me soaring to be a better all-rounder academic in the future,” enthused Dr. Haw Choon Yian.
In the speech, he adviced other educators and researchers not to be afraid of embracing new ideas, embracing research, and most importantly, embracing the extraordinary potential within the students.
“As an educator, I am but a facilitator, nurturing the potential of every single student. I believe that genuine connection with students through proper channels can certainly amplify their learning process and experience,” he added.

About Dr. Haw Choo Yian
Dr. Haw Choo Yian completed his Bachelor’s degree in Nuclear Science and later earned his PhD in Materials Science from the National University of Malaysia (UKM) in 2009 and 2013, respectively. Before joining XMUM, he worked as a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Malaya’s Low Dimensional Materials Research Centre (LDMRC) from 2013 to 2016.
His research expertise spans photoenergy conversion using metal oxides, chalcogenides, and biomaterials for clean energy, healthcare and wastewater treatment. Meanwhile, he has been certified as panel of assessor of Malaysian Qualification Agency (MQA) in 2023 because of his commitment to coordinating professional development and advancing academia.
